Art and Creative Therapy

Our therapy sessions combine talking therapy with the the use of art materials. Art unblocks the brain and allows it to speak where words may not be able to. These therapy sessions provide a confidential, clinical space for you to explore any aspect of your life that may be getting in the way of your future success.

Our therapists are experienced with all age groups and complexities. Complete the booking form below for an initial discussion to see if we are right for you.

Inside - Out: London Brick Project

NHS Hertfordshire Partnership Foundation Trust and Probation Service

Commissioned by the NHS and Probation Service, ColourMeIn designed workshops for both their service users and teams throughout Hertfordshire using the London Brick. The exhibition was held in St Albans Gallery and Museum. This project explored the concept of the London Brick where bricks can symbolise walls and barriers to those who have experienced prison life and have a criminal record, especially if they have a mental health condition.

ATM and Money Project

Excellence in Learning Community - Enfield

Working with Excellence in Learning Community, we developed a project with over 2,000 children in collaboration with schools within Enfield. We based the project around the theme of the ATM as this was where the first ATM in the UK was founded and combined this with Andy Warhol's money factory design.

Our Colourful Story

image.png

At ColourMeIn Wellbeing, we blend creativity and psychology to deliver unique art therapy and wellbeing services to both corporate and community clients. Our qualified mental health professionals ensure transformative experiences that nurture mental wellness through art.

ColourMeIn Wellbeing CIC is a not-for-profit organisation. We work with businesses large and small, NGOs, charities, education and healthcare. All proceeds are ploughed into supporting and delivering community projects that struggle to access mental health care provision with fully trained and registered professionals, especially in Creative Therapies.

Our expertise is within organisational wellbeing supporting leadership and their teams in staff wellbeing using evidence based techniques that provide psychological safe environments and improve outcomes in staff relations and overall mental health.

For our community projects, we have a special interest in supporting those who experience barriers to employment and work with other agencies and partners to deliver bespoke programmes for those who encounter barriers such as neurodiversity, learning disabilities, mental health complexities and a criminal record.

Why do we focus on creative therapies for wellbeing and mental health

Research demonstrates that the act of creativity enhances the reduction of the stress hormone, cortisol (Ray, 2016). The World Health Organisation published a report revealing that over 3,000 studies have shown the powerful effect that art making has on the prevention of illness, promotion of health and management, the treatment of illness across one's lifespan, and the general improvement of

wellbeing (Fancourt, 2019). There’s some science to it, so you can have a little faith that what we are saying here isn’t just, you know…arty farty (not that there is anything wrong with that).

So what is Art Therapy?

Art Therapists / Psychotherapists have a Masters Degree and are registered with the Health Care Professional Council (HCPC) and British Association of Art Therapists (BAAT). We work across all industries and embrace diversity, equity and inclusion, understanding the intersectionality of the human experience.

Our model of practice is extensive but is founded on the Psychodynamic approach. We incorporate theories such as attachment, neuroscience, positive psychology, mentalisation and is an ever expanding field in terms of research and innovation. We value co-productive relationships with our clients to encourage a strong therapeutic relationship.

Art Therapy works on the premise that unconscious thoughts and emotions can be processed in a non-confrontational way though art making. Some thoughts and emotions, especially when they were developed preverbally or are trauma based are held in the parts of the brain that talking therapies alone can struggle to access. Symbol formation and creating images along with the use of our senses, helps develop a conscious narrative in a safe and contained way. This can improve our sense of self, emotional regulation and enhance our relationships.  This can improve working environments by building resilience in staff members and teams.

You can find out more about Art Therapy and the type of work we do at the BAAT website.

Founder and Director

Rachel Oxborough

MA, BSc, HCPC, BAAT

Rachel has developed ColourMeIn over the past 12 years, serving many organisations in creativity and wellbeing. These have typically included education, the criminal justice system and the NHS. She has also delivered wellbeing courses to corporates such as Deloitte and BUPA.

Having studied Psychology (BSc. Hons, BPS accredited) for many years and qualified as an Art Psychotherapist (MA, HCPC, BAAT), she trained with the Tavistock NHS to supervise those working in community contexts.

Rachel has designed programmes to support all industries with staff wellbeing, using evidence-based techniques.

With emerging insights into neuroscience and the growing need to address work-related stress, art therapy is becoming an essential tool in preventing burnout (emotional labour), compassion fatigue, and secondary shock. Her practice is psychodynamic, working within attachment theory, trauma-focused methods, a client-intuitive approach, and positive psychology.

Rachel has a wonderfully supportive husband, who together have raised three amazing human beings — along with a very cute yet cheeky dog called Lola.

Art Therapist

Maisie Read

MA, BA, HCPC, BAAT

Maisie is a qualified Art Psychotherapist, registered with the HCPC and a member of the British Association of Art Therapists (BAAT). Art therapy provides a safe, containing environment where thoughts and experiences can be explored and understood through symbol-making, playfulness and creative expression, particularly when they feel difficult to articulate through words alone.

With many years’ experience in adult mental health, Maisie has seen first-hand the barriers people face when trying to access timely, meaningful psychological support in the UK. This fuels her commitment to the principle that mental health care is a right, not a privilege. Alongside her work with adults, she has supported children and young people at risk of becoming NEET within a PRU setting, where she witnessed the complex challenges young people navigate in order to access education, wellbeing support and a sense of safety.

Her therapeutic approach is relational, psychodynamic and play-oriented, grounded in trauma-informed care. Maisie offers a thoughtful, attuned and collaborative space where clients can begin to make sense of their internal world, build emotional resilience and reconnect with their own capacity for growth and creativity.
